Woven in the rugged mountainous region of northwestern Iran, Meshkin (or Meshkinshahr) rugs are highly prized for beautifully bridging the gap between Persian weaving traditions and the bold, highly geometric aesthetics of the nearby Caucasus. Historically crafted by semi-nomadic tribes and village artisans, these textiles are celebrated for their long, narrow formats—proportions that were originally designed to perfectly fit the architecture of local village homes and corridor spaces. The weavers relied entirely on memory and deep-rooted cultural heritage rather than formal written blueprints, passing down highly stylized motifs that often carried protective or auspicious meanings for their families. This striking antique runner features a vibrant, deeply saturated red field. Running along the central vertical axis is a distinctive, minimalist “pole” design connecting four small, sharply geometric diamond medallions rendered in deep navy blue and ivory. The open, dramatic red field is contained by striking stepped inner boundaries, which lead to a wide, highly detailed ivory primary border. This luminous border is densely packed with repeating geometric tribal motifs and stylized “S” hooks, which historically served in nomadic folklore as protective amulets intended to ward off the evil eye. Crafted with robust, hand-spun mountain wool, this antique runner possesses a highly durable pile engineered to effortlessly endure generations of daily foot traffic. Its exceptional 14-foot length and commanding tribal presence make it a magnificent architectural asset, perfectly suited for anchoring a sweeping traditional hallway, grounding a grand entryway, or adding profound historical character to a long gallery space.

To ensure the longevity and beauty of your hand-knotted rug, regular maintenance is essential. We recommend vacuuming your rug frequently, being careful to turn off the beater bar to prevent damaging the natural fibers and delicate fringe. If spills occur, blot the area immediately with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing, which can push the stain deeper. Rotating your piece every few months will help it wear evenly and minimize color fading from direct sunlight. Finally, to truly protect your investment, we advise having your rug professionally washed at our Evanston cleaning facility every few years to gently remove deeply embedded dirt and restore its original luster.
