They generally originate from the city of Bokhara in Soviet€™s Turkmen. Few rugs were ever woven there, but it was the market place for many types of Turkomen rugs, and the reason why the name Bokhar was given to these rugs. New Bokharas were generally made in northeast of Iran. They crossed into Iran from the Turkmen Socialist Soviet Republic (S.S.R. of Turkmen).

This is a pile-less carpet – a flat stitched rug without nap. It is woven on warp threads the same as any other rug and the surface is sooth. The distinguishing feature of this rug is the loose ends of stitch yarn at the back of the rug, about the same effect as we find in the Cashmere shawl. The designs are very much like those in many Caucasian rugs, and were almost invariably geometric in design.
