The majority of these used traditional oriental designs instead of their own Turkish design. Master weavers were imported to weave and supervise the weaving. This accounts for the fact that many of these – perhaps half of the output – were in oriental designs. Many did employ the designs of the famous Turkish Ghiordes. Good condition! Kurdish rugs are rugs woven by the Kurdish people in the Middle East, predominantly the larger Kurdistan region including the Eastern part of Turkey near the Tauros Mountains, Iraq, southernmost Caucasus, and Soviet Armenia, and Northwestern Iran. When referring to Kurdish rugs within the rug industry, one is referring to those made within Iranian Kurdistan.
Kurdish rugs and carpets do use medallion patterns; however, far more popular are the all-over floral, Mina Khani motifs and the “jaff” geometric patterns. The beauty of Kurdish designs are enriched by high-chroma blues, greens, saffrons as well as terracotta and burnt orange hues made richer still by the lusturous wool used.
The traditional Kurdish Rug uses Kurdish symbols. It is possible to read the dreams, wishes and hopes of the rug maker from the sequence of symbols used. It is this signification and communication both individually and grouped into Kurdish rug making. Kurdish people study how meaning is constructed and understood by talking with the rug maker.

This is a pile-less carpet – a flat stitched rug without nap. It is woven on warp threads the same as any other rug and the surface is sooth. The distinguishing feature of this rug is the loose ends of stitch yarn at the back of the rug, about the same effect as we find in the Cashmere shawl. The designs are very much like those in many Caucasian rugs, and were almost invariably geometric in design.
