This is a pile-less carpet – a flat stitched rug without nap. It is woven on warp threads the same as any other rug and the surface is sooth. The distinguishing feature of this rug is the loose ends of stitch yarn at the back of the rug, about the same effect as we find in the Cashmere shawl. The designs are very much like those in many Caucasian rugs, and were almost invariably geometric in design.

Eclectic Ersari – 1920s Antique Turkmenistan Rug – Tribal Afghan Size: 2’8″ x 4’2″ ft. Ersari carpet, any of a colourful variety of floor coverings handmade by Ersari Turkmen of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Contrary to the custom of the other Turkmen, the Ersaris have no proper gul, or specific tribal motif; consequently, their carpets may have lattices of stepped diamonds, grids of rectangular panels rather like a garden carpet, diagonal rows of small motifs, much-distorted arrangements of Chinese cloud bands, rows of stylized palm trees, or degenerate imitations of Persian herāti and mina khani patterns. Ersari carpets make more use of yellow than do rugs made by other tribes, and often, in backgrounds, two shades of blue blend or are merged with dark brown in a characteristic fashion. Prayer differ from those of the other Turkmen in having frank prayer-niche designs, the arch (to indicate the direction of Mecca, the holy city) constricted at the head. These Ersari prayer rugs are among the most attractive Turkmen products. Ersari carpets are more loosely woven than those of the other Turkmens, with softer wool in coarser knotting. Fair condition! Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.
Although at times you may find kilim rugs included in the general genre of “oriental rugs”, in more accepted practice kilims are in a class of their own.
The major difference between a kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that whereas the design visible on a pile rugs is made by individual short strands of different color being knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts tightly, kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flatweave.
