  • Beautiful Bessarabian – 1960s Antique Romanian Kilim – Tribal Rug – 2′ x 3’10” ft. $499.99
    Size: 2′ x 3’10” ft.
Antique Bessarabian Kilims and rugs in both pile and tapestry weaving technique are some of the more beautiful carpets to have been produced in Europe. Many of the Bessarabian Kilims were woven around the mid to late 19th century, though some do date back to the 18th century as well. This production that carried into the early twentieth century under late Ottoman Turkish rule in an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving. Many of the designs are floral patterns made in a naturalistic western style utilizing brown or black ground, not unlike certain Karabaghs from the Caucauses. But others, particularly flat weaves, reflect the tradition of Turkish kilims from nearby Anatolia, although in a distinctive Bessarbian palette. In either case they are supremely decorative rugs.
Good condition! No odor. Sides and ends original. Flatweave. As shown in pictures.

  • Beautiful Bessarabian – 1930s Antique Turkish Kilim – Flatweave Rug – 8’9″ x 10′ ft $2,499.99

    Size: 8’9″ x 10′ ft

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Russian provinces as well as Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.1 Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian.2 They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

All works of the Bessarabian category are highly decorative. Not dissimilar to particular Karabaghs from the Caucasus, many of the designs crafted in Bessarabian carpets are floral in motif. The designs usually fit within a black or brown tone background, executed in a naturalistic western. Some pieces, in particular the flat-weaves, are woven with the distinctive Bessarabian palette in the tradition of kilim rugs from nearby Anatolia.

  • Special Shahsavan – 1880s Antique Caucasian Kilim – Flatweave Rug 5’7″ x 10’8″ ft. $2,999.99

    Size: 5’7″ x 10’8″ ft.

Shahsavan Rugs – Highly unusual and exciting, antique Shahsavan or Shahsevan rugs and carpets have only recently been recognized as a distinct style of Persian rug. Uniquely, Shahsavan rugs and carpets were woven in an area of Persia known as the Transcaucasus – located today in extreme Northwest Iran. Because of the distinct cultural influences of this unique geographic region, Shahsavan carpets tend to have more in common with tribal rugs than more traditional Persian rugs.

Related to the Kurdish rugs that were also woven in the Transcaucasus region, Shahsavan weavings have a strongly tribal flavor with highly abstract, geometric designs and rich colors. This also makes Shahsavan rugs a close aesthetic cousin of the Caucasian carpets that were also historically woven in this general area.

Shahsavan rugs are sometimes distinguished by certain shades of lavender or deep pink and salmon tones, in conjunction with soft blues; these light colors are atypical in other regional styles. The Shahsavan tribes were originally transported and resettled in the Northwest of Iran from their native homeland in Central Asia by the Persian kings of the seventeenth century. This important historical development helps to explain the close ties between the Shahsavan style and similiar styles developed by the Turkomans and other Central Asian tribes. A unique style of antique Persian rug, Shahsavan rugs and carpets are rich in cultural significance as well as in beauty.

Good condition! No stains, no odor. Sides and ends original. Flatweave – lightly unraveled ends. As shown in pictures.

    Size: 7’1″ x 9’10” ft.

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.

Although at times you may find kilim rugs included in the general genre of “oriental rugs”, in more accepted practice kilims are in a class of their own.

The major difference between a kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that whereas the design visible on a pile rugs is made by individual short strands of different color being knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts tightly, kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flatweave.

The Caucasus is a mountainous region in southwestern Asia that was once part of the Persian Empire. In addition to Azerbaijan, the region also includes Georgia and Armenia. Bordered by Russia to the north, Iran and Turkey to the South, the Caspian Sea to the east, and the Black sea to the west, the Caucasus is generally regarded as the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia.

    Size: 4’1″ x 4’6″ ft

Verné rug, verné also spelled verni or verneh,  handmade Caucasian floor covering that was formerly termed a sileh. It is usually woven in two pieces joined at the middle, with a design composed of squarish compartments, usually in horizonal rows of two per panel. Within the squares are large backward S-shaped figures, representing dragons, filled with smaller Z-shaped figures. Often the field colours of the larger figures alternate from one row to the next. There is a narrow border, at times of reciprocal trefoils. Verné rugs are thought to have been woven around the town of Jebrail (Dzhebrail) in the Karabagh district of southern Azerbaijan.

These pieces are all wool, except for ivory cotton highlighting on a few pieces, and the design is formed in soumak, a form of extra weft wrapping.

  • Jewel Jajim – Fine N.W. Persian Shahsavan Flat-Weave- Wool Tribal rug 5′ x 6′ ft. $1,014.99
Size: 5′ x 6′ ft.  (Combination of 4 pieces sewed together)

Antique Persian Jajim– Jajims are typically woven in square sizes, and are most easily identified by their vertical stripe patterns. They flat woven kilim like carpets that originate from Iran and are woven in horizontal loom. The exact date these ancient cloths were first woven is not entirely known, though it is believed that some of the Antique Textile illustrated in fourteenth century Persian paintings may have been Jajims. Regardless of the exact year in which these extraordinary cloths were first created, it is clear that the Jajim has a very long history and has held an important role in Iran’s artistic past.

The material used to make the Jajims was usually wool, and the dyes used for older Jajims were all vegetable-based. Sadly the number of antique Persian Jajims that are left intact is decreasing rapidly, since it is a common practice to unravel these textiles and use them to repair and restore other rugs and Flat-woven kilms that may fetch a higher price.

Traditionally, Persian Jajims served many purposes. Most frequently, they were used as bed covers in order to protect the wearer from the cold. Freshly-made Jajims were often coarse and rough to the touch, but soon softened after frequent use. Often a family would place a charcoal brazier in the center of a Jajim and all sit around it. Additionally, Jajim owners would often spread them on the ground and sleep on top of them. Thicker Jajims were employed as horse covers, while thinner Jajims were frequently used for decoration and have been prized as luxury items in Iran for centuries.

In good condition, no stain or odor, has one corner fraying as shown in pictures.
