Caucasian rugs are rugs that come from the countries that comprise the small region of the world called the Caucasus. This region is the birthplace of Caucasian rugs, the vast majority of which are made in the country of Azerbaijan.
The Caucasus is a mountainous region in southwestern Asia that was once part of the Persian Empire. In addition to Azerbaijan, the region also includes Georgia and Armenia. Bordered by Russia to the north, Iran and Turkey to the South, the Caspian Sea to the east, and the Black sea to the west, the Caucasus is generally regarded as the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia.Â

Karadagh rugs can be some of the finest village rugs woven in Northwest Persia. This colorful and elegant runner is an extraordinary example of its type. The wool is exceptionally lush and soft, and the drawing and spacing are beautifully executed. In this rug, a column of colorful diamonds and lobed ornaments are traced against a deep indigo ground. These lobed ornaments combine classic Persian motifs, including palmettes and lobed quatrefoil medallions, with quintessentially tribal elements such as latch-hook diamonds. The thin, radial projections emanating from several of the design elements recall drawing from rugs of both the neighboring Caucasus region and more distant Central Asia. These motifs point to the possibility of a Shahsevan tribal weaver. A rust ground main border decorated with linked, abstracted floral motifs, which is the defining Karadagh border, frames the field.

The fine wool-on-wool Turkish rugs woven in Bergama used only the finest quality fleece. Kazak-influenced Bergama carpets are often identified by their distinctive red wefts. Their varied styles include compartmental medallions, directional prayer niches, Kuba-style Leshgi stars and Memling guls. The local carpet-weaving tradition in Bergama began before the 1300’s and continued through the 20th century. Historically, Bergama was one of Anatolia’s wealthiest cities and an influential carpet producer. The decorative elements featured in Turkish Bergama carpets undoubtedly inspired the Old Masters. Designs found in these historic carpets are inextricably associated with European painters, including Lotto, Memling, Bellini and Holbein, whose names have come to describe these iconic designs. Each Bergama carpet features a stunning array of traditional symbols that have a universal meaning that transcends national borders. The style, color and symbolism of these unique Turkish carpets make them popular design pieces. These colorful rugs embody years of superstition and culture that are carefully represented through the use of artistic devices. Superficially, Bergama carpets are highly decorative, but they are also made from fine materials and packed with powerful symbols that contribute tangible and intangible qualities to these sophisticated pieces. Although Bergama rugs feature tribal designs and decorative symbols that have rustic, ethnic sensibilities, they are equally suited for contemporary and classically modern interiors. Bergama rugs (alt. Bergamo carpets) are made in the historic town of Bergama in northwest Turkey. The style of these rugs is neither Greek nor Turkish but rather resembles Kazaks and Gendje rugs of the Caucasus. The large bold geometric patterns are highly varied. The palate is typically brick red, dark blue and white although older rugs have some green and yellow. The pile is luxurious, long and silky. These antique rugs have woven bands of red, blue or red-and-blue stripe at the ends and are often square with either formal or tribal influences. Good condition! No stains, no odor. Sides and ends original. Contains medium pile. As shown in pictures.

Shahsavan Rugs – Highly unusual and exciting, antique Shahsavan or Shahsevan rugs and carpets have only recently been recognized as a distinct style of Persian rug. Uniquely, Shahsavan rugs and carpets were woven in an area of Persia known as the Transcaucasus – located today in extreme Northwest Iran. Because of the distinct cultural influences of this unique geographic region, Shahsavan carpets tend to have more in common with tribal rugs than more traditional Persian rugs.
Related to the Kurdish rugs that were also woven in the Transcaucasus region, Shahsavan weavings have a strongly tribal flavor with highly abstract, geometric designs and rich colors. This also makes Shahsavan rugs a close aesthetic cousin of the Caucasian carpets that were also historically woven in this general area.
Shahsavan rugs are sometimes distinguished by certain shades of lavender or deep pink and salmon tones, in conjunction with soft blues; these light colors are atypical in other regional styles. The Shahsavan tribes were originally transported and resettled in the Northwest of Iran from their native homeland in Central Asia by the Persian kings of the seventeenth century. This important historical development helps to explain the close ties between the Shahsavan style and similiar styles developed by the Turkomans and other Central Asian tribes. A unique style of antique Persian rug, Shahsavan rugs and carpets are rich in cultural significance as well as in beauty.
