Tekke rugs were formerly made inRussia’sTurkestan, in the Merv district, which is one of the most fertile anywhere, and in the Ahal Tekke tribe area. Today, this area is known asTurkmenistan. The name Tekke comes from the Tekke tribes. As a class, Tekke or Royal Bokhara rugs are one of the finest of all rugs ever woven. Their nap is short and the design is distinct. The design is invariably geometric with three rows of octagons. There are many shades of Turkoman reds, mahogany, or even a plum cast.
