All different types of rugs that are classed as Turkoman rugs are known by the laymen and most dealers as Bokharas, and this is a general term. They generally originate from the city of Bokhara in Soviet’s Turkmen. Few rugs were ever woven there, but it was the market place for many types of Turkomen rugs, and the reason why the name Bokhar was given to these rugs. New Bokharas were generally made in northeast of Iran. They crossed into Iran from the Turkmen Socialist Soviet Republic (S.S.R. of Turkmen).
