This part of the world has been a crossroads of armies, including Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the British and Russians.

The Agra rugs use the Persian or asymmetrical knot, with foundations and pile of wool and cotton. Weaving tends to be extremely dense, with up to 2000 knots per square inch in some very fine silk carpets. Agra Rugs show the influence of their Persian stylistic heritage, but a vitality in design and color sets them apart from Persian styles.
Agra rugs use a soft color palette. The field is often yellow, saffron, beige or light green, although deep reds are also used. Motifs are woven in a variety of colors.

This is a pile-less carpet – a flat stitched rug without nap. It is woven on warp threads the same as any other rug and the surface is sooth. The distinguishing feature of this rug is the loose ends of stitch yarn at the back of the rug, about the same effect as we find in the Cashmere shawl. The designs are very much like those in many Caucasian rugs, and were almost invariably geometric in design.
