All different types of rugs that are classed as Turkoman rugs are known by the laymen and most dealers as Bokharas, and this is a general term. They generally originate from the city of Bokhara in Soviet€™s Turkmen. Few rugs were ever woven there, but it was the market place for many types of Turkomen rugs, and the reason why the name Bokhar was given to these rugs. New Bokharas were generally made in northeast of Iran. They crossed into Iran from the Turkmen Socialist Soviet Republic (S.S.R. of Turkmen).

Size: 2’1″ x 4’5″ ft The Deco period was an international design movement from 1920’s to 1940’s. It produced a mix of many different styles borrowing design influences from neoclassical, constructionist, cubism, modernism and art nouveau. The Art Deco movement led to the evolution of the carpet revolution. Antique carpets made before the 1920’s, especially the more refined oriental carpets, did not compliment the modern decor and Art Deco furnishings. A new style was taking shape that reflected this movement. Carpet design evolved from floral to angular elegance with modern, abstract and figurative motifs. The color palate is both bold and muted with interesting juxtapositions of light and dark. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural with a luxurious feel. Such characteristics come together to create the aesthetics of a large swath of vintage rugs. Such legendary artists as Picasso, Poiret, Gray, Delaunay, Klee, Paul and Dorn shaped this evolution. Paule Leleu the daughter of Jules Leleu of the famed House of Leleu was a talented creator whose vision also contributed to these highly collectible rugs.
In the rug trade, term “Art Deco” or “Deco” (as in “Deco Rugs” for short) applies to European and certain Chinese carpets that reflect the new movements in modern European decorative arts during the first third of the twentieth century.
Art Deco Rugs are characterized by experimentation with bold colors, angular lines, and the omission of heavy ornamentation. Over the past few years, the demand for art deco rugs and art deco carpets has grown tremendously. Partly fueled by the revival of mid-century modernist interior design trends, Art deco rugs come from various regions in Europe but some of the most coveted pieces are the art deco carpets or rugs that were made in France, China and Scandinavia (which are really mid-century modern but when it comes to interior design the term art deco does fit in well). Since a rug need to be 80 years old or older to be called antique, in only a few more years, the art deco vintage rug could be be referred to as Antique Art Deco rugs.
While the term Art Deco really refers to a movement / time period, most rug dealers will refer to any of the modernist rugs as art deco. So if you have your heart set on true deco rugs – then you might have to sort through some of the other types of “deco rugs” – which might not be a bad thing at all!
Deco rugs created in the dawn of the 20th century feature trendsetting designs that are daring and stylish today. These landmark pieces marked the transition from classical to modern. The result is a timeless style that remains elegant and refined. This innovative era in history produced many distinctive antique and semi-antique carpets that are exceptionally desirable. In the East and the West, creative geniuses conceived unimaginable patterns unlike anything seen before.
European designers developed streamlined geometric compositions and expressive abstract patterns. The legacy of Scandinavia’s famous master weavers was just beginning when art deco was defined, and many fabulous mid-century designs grew out of this innovative and productive time. In China, fine Oriental carpets were produced on an unprecedented scale. The rich colors, sophisticated details and Eastern-influenced designs featured in Chinese art deco rugs define the sleek, sophisticated style of this extraordinary era. For an interior that is posh, modern and timeless, Art Deco rugs are the ultimate choice.

Within the antique rugs milieu familiar to collectors and rug enthusiasts, no single group of rugs has had a more checkered or contested career than those woven by the Baluch tribes of western Afghanistan. Perhaps the most rudimentary (and most common) arguments against these tribal pieces came from decorators who often found Baluches to be too dark with a relatively restricted rustics of colors and minimal use of ivory or white. They also pointed to their fragility, due largely to the looseness of their weave and the softness of their wool.
Good condition for its age! No stains, no odor. Loose ends due to aging, with overall low pile and worn spots – as shown in pictures.

All works of the Bessarabian category are highly decorative, Not dissimilar to particular Karabaghs from the Caucasus, many of the designs crafted in Bessarabian carpets are floral in motif. The designs usually fit within a black or brown tone background, executed in a naturalistic western. Some pieces, in particular the flat-weaves, are woven with the distinctive Bessarabian palette in the tradition of kilim rugs from nearby Anatolia.

Oushak rugs have been woven in Western Turkey since the beginning of the Ottoman period. Historians attributed to them many of the great masterpieces of early Turkish carpet weaving from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. However, less is known about what happened to production there in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. When things become clearer toward 1900, the Oushak region re-emerges as a major center, this time for room-size decorative rugs. Antique Turkish carpets such as these are desirable today as highly decorative pieces. They come in central medallion designs as well as patterns of smaller allover medallions or scattered sprays of vine scroll and palmettes. They are notable for the grand, monumental scale of the designs, often a subdued palette in soft apricot and golden saffron tones whose pleasing qualities are enhanced by their particularly soft and lustrous wool.
Cosmopolitan and sophisticated are two words that aptly describe Oushak’s luxurious carpets. Although the Ghiordes knot and the quirky angular designs have a certain primitive air, regional rugs are exceptionally unique and attractive. Without compromising to appeal to Western consumers, weavers here managed to create one of the country’s most desirable carpet styles. The angular arabesques and ornamental medallions are not dissimilar from Persian motifs but are executed in a more rectilinear manner and woven in a unique palette that includes bold Mediterranean-influenced colors and chic pastels.
The Oushak Rugs have become the rugs of choice for many of the top interior decorators in the world today. For the most part they are not high quality rugs but that is what makes them so special. Since the knot count is considerably lower than the antique rugs made in Persia – antique Turkish rugs were woven with larger scale patterns. These carpets are also extremely desirable because of their colors – which are usually much lighter and “happier” in feel than rugs from other regions. So if you are looking for an antique or vintage rug with a large scale design and soft colors, theses should top your list.

Milas rugs have been produced since the 19th century and are defined by wide borders and small fields. Milas rugs are finely woven and generally small in size. Probably the most commonly known style of Milas rugs are the small Milas prayer rugs, which commonly display the mihrab design. These prayer rugs may be the most well known Milas rugs, but Milas rugs are also made longer, as runner rugs with geometric shapes and floral patterns.
In general, being Turkish rugs, Milas rugs are hand-woven with natural wool fibers and dyed with natural plant-based dyes. Each and every Milas rug is unique and is proudly made in the long-standing tradition of Milas people. There is simply no comparison between hand-woven Milas rugs and machine-made rugs, created with synthetic fibers.
Even though Milas rugs have not been in existence as long as other examples of Turkish rugs, they are still made by families that have been making these rugs for generations. Young women and girls learn the art of weaving at an early age and continue to weave both as a hobby and in order to earn an income, which is easy to do because Milas rugs and Turkish rugs are world renowned for their beauty and quality. Many noted people have admired Turkish rugs, including Marco Polo. The Milas rugs live up to this tradition by displaying the vibrant colours and patterns that make them more than mere rugs and carpets; they are works of art.

Baluchi tribes live in black tents. Their rugs are woven on horizontal (flat) looms. There are several different tribes of Baluchi with different names. The principal colors used are three shades of dark red, two shades of blue, tan or brown, with tinges of ivory and other colors. The color effect generally is that of dark, somber red, mahogany, wine or brown. Up until World War II, all Baluchistan came with woolen warp, and had a wide kilim effect on each end. Today many of these are being made with cotton warp, which makes for a straighter rug that will lie flat.

Kilim, a word of Turkish origin, denotes a pileless textile of many uses produced by one of several flatweaving techniques that have a common or closely related heritage and are practiced in the geographical area that includes parts of Turkey (Anatolia and Thrace), North Africa, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia and China.
Although at times you may find kilim rugs included in the general genre of “oriental rugs”, in more accepted practice kilims are in a class of their own.
The major difference between a kilim area rug and a carpet or a pile rug is that whereas the design visible on a pile rugs is made by individual short strands of different color being knotted onto the warps and held together by pressing the wefts tightly, kilim designs are made by interweaving the variously colored wefts and warps, thus creating what is known as a flatweave.

Antique Persian Jajim– Jajims are typically woven in square sizes, and are most easily identified by their vertical stripe patterns. They flat woven kilim like carpets that originate from Iran and are woven in horizontal loom. The exact date these ancient cloths were first woven is not entirely known, though it is believed that some of the Antique Textile illustrated in fourteenth century Persian paintings may have been Jajims. Regardless of the exact year in which these extraordinary cloths were first created, it is clear that the Jajim has a very long history and has held an important role in Iran’s artistic past.
The material used to make the Jajims was usually wool, and the dyes used for older Jajims were all vegetable-based. Sadly the number of antique Persian Jajims that are left intact is decreasing rapidly, since it is a common practice to unravel these textiles and use them to repair and restore other rugs and Flat-woven kilms that may fetch a higher price.
Traditionally, Persian Jajims served many purposes. Most frequently, they were used as bed covers in order to protect the wearer from the cold. Freshly-made Jajims were often coarse and rough to the touch, but soon softened after frequent use. Often a family would place a charcoal brazier in the center of a Jajim and all sit around it. Additionally, Jajim owners would often spread them on the ground and sleep on top of them. Thicker Jajims were employed as horse covers, while thinner Jajims were frequently used for decoration and have been prized as luxury items in Iran for centuries.
In good condition, no stain or odor, has one corner fraying as shown in pictures.
