Hand knotted in northern Afghanistan by Hazara weavers in a cottage industry setting using handspun wool on upright looms. The word, ‘Kazak’ means ‘rough-rider’ and describes a race of restless, roaming, troublesome people. Even though they adopted more sedentary lives, the independent spirit of their ancestors continues in their rug designs. Kebabian’s only imports the finest Afghan Kazakhs, which not only look awesome, but are made using quality wool and dyes.

The Kazak rugs of this border region are inspired by the carpets of the Caucasus from the 19th and 20th centuries. The rugs take their name from Kazakh, a small town in North West Azerbaijan, which was once a weaving and trading center for Caucasian rugs.
Faithful to color and design, the Kazak rug weavers also go to great lengths to reproduce the aged look of the original works. The wool is tightly spun before knotting is commenced, thus giving a dense but flat and thin finish, which is otherwise achieved through years of gentle wear. In addition, a soft abrash effect is employed during weaving and a special wash at the end of the process leaves a beautifully soft look to the rug.
Although exported from Pakistan, these rugs are usually woven by Afghans. Throughout the nineties, many Afghans fled from the oppressive Taliban regime into Pakistan and the border region of North East Afghanistan. As a result, many thousands of skilled rug weavers found themselves in Pakistan, In comparison to their former home Pakistan offered more resources and materials used in rug making. Improved access to western markets made their rugs easy to trade.
Afghan weaver who previously would have woven in two perhaps three colors (usually deep red, black and grey or white) were able to embrace new methods and resources and the result has been phenomenal. This influx of weavers has been instrumental in bringing Kazak rugs to the forefront of the global rug trade, along side the Ziegler carpets which are woven in the same area.
Good condition! No stains, no odor. Sides and ends original. Contains medium low pile. As shown in pictures.

Khotan, an ancient Buddhist kingdom, was located on a branch of the famous Silk Road in Eastern Turkestan, in what is modern-day Xinjiang, China. Carpets from this region, though made in the cities of Kashgar and Yarkand as well as Khotan, are often called Samarkand rugs, after the name of the Uzbek city on the Silk Road that served as a major commercial hub for the sale and export of textiles.
The tradition of rug weaving in this region goes back to around the 3rd century, although most of the surviving examples date from the 19th and 20th centuries. Local weavers would traditionally employ both horizontal and vertical looms and use wool, a wool and cotton blend, or silk. Natural dyes made from onion skins, madder roots and walnut shells were all employed.
Rugs tend to be long and narrow, with repeating, geometric patterning. The most common designs found are the Khotan vase, with a dominant theme of horizontal vases and large flowers such as peonies demonstrating Chinese influences. Also frequently seen is the Yarkand pomegranate, sitting on branches in a vase, symbolizing fertility.

Baluchi tribes live in black tents. Their rugs are woven on horizontal (flat) looms. There are several different tribes of Eluchi with different names. The principal colors used are three shades of dark red, two shades of blue, tan or brown, with tinges of ivory and other colors. The color effect generally is that of dark, somber red, mahogany, wine or brown. Up until World War II, all Balouchistan came with woolen warp, and had a wide kilim effect on each end. Today many of these are being made with cotton warp, which makes for a straighter rug that will lie flat.
Good condition! No stains, no odor. All sides and ends original. Contains medium pile – as shown in pictures.
